Variété française" or "chanson française" refers to a group of musical compositions in the French language. It often refers to tunes from guinguettes, cabarets, ballads or romantic songs. In modern usage, all French-speaking artists are grouped under the term "variété française".
For example: Jacques Brel, Félix Leclerc, Angèle, Stromae, Henri Dès are not French, but French-speaking artists of French variety.
